AS is not banned outright in the EU, but Regulation (EU) 10/2011 lists acrylonitrile with a non-detectable (ND) migration limit, applying the regulation’s default 0.01 mg/kg detection threshold for ND substances. That’s a tough bar for refillable drinkware to clear. PC fails because of BPA; the EU adopted the ban on 19 December 2024, taking effect shortly after publication.
What Is Tritan Plastic?
Tritan is the premium choice for transparent drinkware
Tritan is a copolyester material developed by Eastman. It is widely used in high-end reusable bottles because of its high transparency, good impact resistance, heat resistance, and BPA-free performance.
Compared with common plastics, Tritan has better durability. It can handle temperatures up to around 100°C, making it suitable for products that may contact warm water. For brands targeting premium markets, Tritan is often the first choice.

SK is another transparent copolyester material used in drinkware. It is produced in Korea and has similar characteristics to Tritan. SK can handle temperatures around 99°C. The main difference is the material feeling.

SK material has good flexibility. During production, the bottle thread area usually does not create powder problems. This makes it a good choice for transparent bottles that require a clean appearance.
Is PS plastic a good budget choice for bottles?
PS is a common choice for budget transparent bottles
PS (Polystyrene) is a hard plastic material. It provides good transparency, a hard surface feeling, and lower material cost.
However, PS has lower heat resistance. Usually, it is suitable for temperatures around 70–80°C.
One issue manufacturers need to consider is thread processing. During production, PS threads may create small plastic powder. This requires additional cleaning during manufacturing.

Why does AS plastic have safety limitations?
AS looks similar to PS but has different chemical properties
AS (Acrylonitrile Styrene) is another transparent plastic.
It is harder than many plastic materials and has good clarity. However, AS contains acrylonitrile. Because of this characteristic, it cannot meet some EU food safety requirements for drinkware applications.

How Much Heat Can Each Material Actually Take?
Heat decides where a bottle can go — hot-fill lines, dishwashers, or cold drinks only. The bar chart shows the safe ceiling for each resin. Bars in green pass EU food contact; the red bar shows PC, which resists heat but fails on BPA.
What is thread powder, and why does it matter?
Thread powder is the fine dust you see on the screw threads where the cap meets the bottle neck. It shows up on PS and AS. The hard resin is rigid, so the cap grinds the neck as it twists, and the dust stays behind.
Buyers read it as a defect — and in food use, it is one. Tritan, SK, and PET avoid it. Their softer resin flexes instead of grinding, so the threads stay clean straight out of the mold.
Which materials meet the EU food-safety line for BPA?
BPA (bisphenol A) once filled polycarbonate. It can leach into drinks, which is why EFSA lowered its safe limit and the EU acted. Tritan, SK, PS, AS, and PET are all BPA-free. PC is the one to drop.
On 19 December 2024 the European Commission adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/3190. It bans BPA in any material that touches food or drink. PC bottles are repeat-use articles made with BPA. They cannot be placed on the EU market for the first time after 20 July 2026. Filled PC stock gets a transition window to 20 July 2027. Bottles already in use can keep circling until about 20 January 2029.
Bottom line for EU buyers: pick Tritan, SK, PS, or PET. Skip PC entirely, and skip AS for any bottle a customer refills and washes.
For EU sales, watch a second chemical: acrylonitrile in AS. Regulation (EU) 10/2011 allows SAN only if acrylonitrile migration stays at or below 0.02 mg/kg. That is a tight line for a bottle in daily use, so AS normally fails the test that matters. The US FDA keeps the same caution on food-contact plastics.

Which plastic bottle material is the safest?

Is PS plastic safe for water bottles?
